About This Event
The forests and mountains around Blue Ridge are teeming with wildlife, which is part of what makes the area so special. However, visitors should be aware of their wild neighbors. Black bears are the most notable residents — keep food secured and give them space. Coyotes are present but rarely seen; keep small pets supervised, especially at dawn and dusk. Venomous snakes include copperheads (most common), timber rattlesnakes, and rarely, cottonmouths near water. Watch where you step and put your hands, especially on rocky trails. Ticks are prevalent from spring through fall — wear long pants on trails and use DEET-based repellent. White-tailed deer are abundant; drive cautiously, especially at dawn and dusk when they're most active on mountain roads. Enjoy observing wildlife from a distance and never attempt to feed or handle wild animals.
